The wedding of Lord Roderick Grey to Lady Marina Spencer was unconventional, to say the least. Although Emilia was excited for their union, she couldn’t help but marvel at the colorful cast of characters that surrounded her in the church. It seemed that Lady Marina’s entire company of actors was there to celebrate with her, and all of them spoke loudly and grandly, their voices reverberating throughout the small church. As Lady Marina walked down the aisle, one of her theatrical friends sang a song, and there were several other performers playing instruments.

Emilia noted how lovely Lady Marina looked in her sky blue gown, a beautiful veil covering her face. At the end of the aisle, Roderick was there to greet her in a fine suit, and at his side Harry stood, in a fine suit of his own. Compared to all other weddings that Emilia had been to, the one between her brother and Lady Marina was much more lively, and Emilia delighted in it. Although, looking to the side at her husband, Emilia could see an amused, albeit confused, expression upon his face.

“Isn’t it marvellous?” Emilia whispered to the earl.

“It’s . . . different,” he replied. The earl held Emilia’s hand tightly throughout the ceremony, and she placed a loving hand upon her large belly.

“She’s kicking,” Emilia said with a giggle, and Lord Joshua looked down at her belly in wonder. Then he, as well, placed a hand upon her stomach to feel the kicking for himself.

“So she is,” he replied.

They had no way of knowing for certain if it was a boy or a girl, but after their conversation, they more or less decided to refer to the child as a girl. It made things simpler and easier.

At the altar, Lady Marina and Roderick held hands and looked into each other’s eyes whilst the vicar read the Banns. The ceremony was simple and brief, not unlike Emilia’s own wedding, and once it was done, the happy couple came back down the aisle, Lady Marina holding Roderick’s hand on one side and Harry’s hand on the other. The theatrical audience hollered and cheered quite loudly, and once outside, everyone in the party hastily made their way, not to a traditional wedding breakfast, but to the theatre, where a great deal of set pieces were erected in order to set the stage for a perfect celebration.

Emilia couldn’t believe the excitement and enthusiasm that surrounded her. Here in one corner, there was a rather tall woman singing a beautiful song, there in another corner, dancers performed, and upon the stage, actors took turns getting up and reciting famous speeches from Hamlet and the Greek tragedies. Emilia thought it most extraordinary, the life and energy of that troupe. There were much more of them than she suspected, and just like Roderick and Lady Marina, they all seemed to have families with a number of children running about and playing, whilst also admiring the performances that were taking place around them.

“I can see why people live their lives in the theatre,” Emilia said to the earl.

“I would be exhausted after one day,” he replied with a smile.

“Yes, but imagine how well you’d sleep every night, after a day of so much creativity.”

Emilia and the earl continued to walk about, seeing everything that there was to see. Finally, Roderick got up upon the stage and the crowd was instructed to hush themselves so that he might speak. He had a glass of champagne in his hand.

“Please forgive me, as I’m not accustomed to extending my voice as the rest of you are,” Roderick began, and the crowd laughed in response. “Nor am I accustomed to expressing my emotions to a hungry audience. So these words I will share humbly, in hopes that you will all give me a good review!” Roderick added bashfully, and then again there was a loud cheer. “Lady Marina Spencer, or rather, Lady Marina Grey, is someone that is near and dear to all of you. For too long, no one has known that she has been near and dear to me, as well. Lady Marina has always been the love of my life, and with courage and good counsel, I now am able to proclaim that for the rest of my days.”

Emilia felt herself becoming emotional and reached into her reticule for a handkerchief. Her brother was truly coming into himself, before her very eyes. He continued.

“Our son, Harry Grey, is a fine, upstanding gentleman that shall no doubt only wish to play Hamlet in his later years.” To this, the audience laughed and cheered. “I will, of course, discourage him from the theatrical life, only because I know how broke you all are,” Roderick said teasingly, “but in truth, I will accept and encourage whatever it is that he wants to do. You all lead unconventional lives, and many shy away from that. But I, for one, think that a life of creativity and love is a life worth living. And for that, I wish to raise this glass to my beautiful wife and child, and also,” Roderick said, turning towards Emilia and Lord Joshua, “to my incredibly supportive sister, the Countess of Derby, and her husband, the Earl of Derby.”

The crowd turned to Emilia and Lord Joshua and they waved their hands in acknowledgement. There were more cheers from the crowd and Roderick left the stage, no doubt to begin some serious celebration.

Emilia and the earl continued to mill about, talking with various people in attendance and delighting in the animated conversation. Finally, Emilia was approached by Lady Marina, looking radiant in her gown and glowing from sheer happiness.

“Lady Emilia, may I now call you sister?” Lady Marina asked.

“But of course,” Emilia replied, receiving a kiss upon each cheek from her sister-in-law.

“And may I now call you uncle?” Harry’s little voice asked. Emilia looked down and saw that her nephew was standing at Lord Joshua’s side; so small in comparison that one would scarce notice him. The earl looked down at the child and smiled.

“Naturally,” he replied warmly, leaning over and picking the boy up into his arms. As Emilia watched her husband hold the small child and delighted in the relaxed expression on Harry’s face, she knew deep within her bones that Lord Joshua was going to be a remarkable father. The thought warmed her heart so fully that Emilia felt tears come to her eyes once more.

“It was a lovely wedding,” Emilia said, brushing away a tear.

“If there’s anything that thespians excel at,” Lady Marina said, “it’s putting on a good show. Everything was just right.”

“You have such lovely friends,” Emilia went on.

“They’re full of love, are they not? I wouldn’t ask for any other troupe in the world. They embrace Harry with open arms, and everyone is always so giving,” Lady Marina said.

Emilia couldn’t help but marvel at Roderick’s good fortune. Although Lady Marina did not lead a traditional life, she still led a rich life of love and creativity. Emilia could understand why Roderick shunned this life at first, but she was so happy that he finally embraced it. And what’s more, Emilia was happy that she could share in the good fun, as well.

“Have you been to Esmerelda?” Lady Marina finally asked.

“I beg your pardon?” Emilia replied.

“Esmerelda? The palm reader. You really must get your palm read,” Lady Marina instructed.

“Oh, I’m not so sure,” Emilia replied, thinking it rather odd.

“Come now!” Lady Marina replied, taking Emilia by the arm. Before being led away, Emilia looked towards her husband for support. There was a playful smile upon Lord Joshua’s lips, signifying that he was amused by it all. Lady Marina escorted Emilia to where Esmerelda was seated at a table embellished with a colourful silk scarf. There was a crystal ball in front of her.

Emilia seated herself across from Esmerelda and felt a lump in her throat. She had never done anything so exotic before in her life, but anticipation filled her. She looked back towards the earl once more, who seemed to be engaged in conversation a few paces off. Emilia would be able to speak with Esmeralda in secret, which seemed amusing for reasons that she could not describe.

“You have come to the right place,” Esmerelda said, looking down at Emilia’s belly.

“I was led here by my sister,” Emilia said with a smile, looking up at Lady Marina.

“I’ll leave you two,” Lady Marina said, walking off.

“Now, there is much to discuss,” Esmerelda went on. “Let me see your hand.” Emilia did as she was instructed, and reached her hand out across the table so that Esmerelda could take it into her own. “Ah ha!” Esmerelda exclaimed.

“What is it?” Emilia asked in surprise.

“How much do you want to know?” Esmerelda asked, lifting her brow.

“I would like to know everything,” Emilia replied, wondering if that was the appropriate response or not.

“Then, let’s begin,” Esmerelda said, still holding Emilia’s hand but closing her eyes as though in a trance. “Please place your other hand upon this ball,” she instructed. Emilia looked down at the crystal ball that seemed to be glowing from within. She placed her free hand upon it and felt its warmth on the tips of her fingers. “About your marriage . . . ” Esmerelda began.

“Oh, dear,” Emilia replied, thinking it improper to be discussing her marriage with a complete stranger.

“It will be long and happy,” Esmerelda went on, opening her eyes wide. They were a remarkable color that Emilia thought nearly purple in hue. “Far more successful than most marriages. You will be contented for the rest of your days.” Emilia heaved a sigh of relief, but she was not surprised. She had sensed for some time that her marriage to Lord Joshua would be nothing but a contented dream.

“That is kind of you to say.”

“I’m not being kind,” Esmerelda replied, becoming indignant as though offended. “It’s the truth. It’s all here in your palm.”

“I see,” Emilia replied.

“As for your ripe belly,” Esmerelda went on, and Emilia was temporarily embarrassed that the palm reader had referred to it as a ‘ripe belly’ at all. “There is much to celebrate.”

A wave of anticipation came over Emilia as she realized that perhaps Esmerelda was about to tell her the sex of her child. For so long, she and the earl had been referring to the child as a girl, but what if they were wrong? Thank heaven’s the child’s room at Findley House had not yet been decorated. Should it have been upholstered for a girl and Esmerelda told her that it was a boy, Emilia would be mortified.

“Yes?” Emilia asked, sensing that it was taking Esmerelda rather a long time to respond.

“There is more than one little joy,” Esmerelda said with a little smile upon her lips.

“Whatever do you mean?” Emilia asked.

“There is not one child within you, but two.”

Emilia was dumbfounded and didn’t know what to say. Surely, Esmerelda was incorrect in her palm reading. There was no chance that there were two babies within her. As a mother, she should have been able to sense as much! Emilia was convinced of it. Yet still, she couldn’t help but wonder for the rest of the evening just how truthful the palm reader’s prediction had been.

***

As Lord Joshua lay in bed that night, he couldn’t help but be grateful for his quiet life at Findley House. He had enjoyed the theatrical wedding, and was happy that Roderick had finally assumed his duty as a family man, yet still. The delightful cast of characters had been fun for a time, but he was finally alone in bed with his wife. There was nothing else that Lord Joshua wanted in life.

“Do you wish to know what the palm reader told me?” Emilia asked in the darkness, one candle burning on a side table.

“I do,” the earl replied.

“She said that I was bearing twins,” Emilia said softly.

The earl went silent, thinking the prediction both amazing and ridiculous at the same time.

“Is that so?” Lord Joshua asked.

“Indeed.”

Within moments, both he and Emilia were laughing heartily at the very notion of it. The earl kissed his wife upon the forehead and it was not long before they were both fast asleep.

At some time in the night, the earl knew not when he was awoken by the sound of his wife crying out in pain. Lord Joshua’s heart pounded in his chest and a cold sweat broke out instantly over his body.

“What is going on?” he said to Emilia, putting a hand upon her shoulder.

“The babe is coming.”

“It’s far too early,” the earl protested.

“It’s happening,” Emilia insisted.

Unable to control himself, the earl sprung out of bed and ran down the stairs, not bothering with a dressing gown. He wore only a pair of sleeping pants and his chest was exposed. Within minutes, all of the servants of Findley House were awoken, including Giles, and the earl insisted that every doctor and midwife in town be summoned at once.

“It’s the middle of the night,” Giles protested.

“I’m not stupid. Of course, it’s the middle night. And I don’t care one jot. Call everyone that you can!” the earl insisted. There was no room for error. His very mother had been lost in childbirth. The painful memory of that filled him with urgency and dread. Why was Emilia having the child so soon? And was it even healthy to do so? Lord Joshua felt crazed and mad all at once.

“They are arriving soon,” Giles said to the earl.

“Not soon enough.”

“Patience, M’Lord,” Giles said, trying to calm his master, but nothing would help to calm the earl’s nerves until his wife had safely given birth to their child.

“To hell with patience!”

The servants moved Emilia to her private chambers where soft candles were lit, fresh linens were procured, as well as other things to comfort the lady during her distress. A cool glass of water was placed by her side, and the female servants massaged her shoulders and feet. When the earl tried to enter the room, he was told by one of the two midwives that had already arrived that perhaps he should remain downstairs. The earl, thinking this utterly foolish, pushed his way into the door to see his wife writhing in pain upon the bed. He pushed everyone away, seating himself beside her and stroking her forehead.

“Lord Joshua,” Roderick said, having arrived rather quickly once he heard the news. “The doctors have arrived. It’s best to remove yourself.” The earl gave no verbal response to this. He simply would not budge. It was as though he were in a dream, and looking about the room, he didn’t even notice that, indeed, all the doctors were there. Emilia was pushing at that point and her cries of pain nearly killed Lord Joshua in the deepest part of his soul. “Come, M’Lord,” Roderick instructed once more.

“No.”

“Yes, it’s better for Emilia. Trust me, your Grace. I have been through this before.”

“I said, no!” Lord Joshua cried, lashing out.

“It cannot be prevented,” Roderick said, pulling the earl by the arm, trying to physically remove him from the room. Although Roderick’s physical force was not enough to take Lord Joshua from the room, seeing the frightened faces that surrounded him, the earl thought it best to relent. He did not wish to create more drama than was necessary. His child would be born in peace, and if that meant that he needed to absent himself, then so be it. He allowed himself to be removed by Roderick, and went out into the garden, taking advantage of the fresh air in order to calm himself. Looking up at the black sky darted with stars, Lord Joshua did something that he had not done in some time. He prayed. He informed the Lord that, without Emilia, life was not worth living. Lord Joshua stood there for some time, looking up until he heard cries of joy come from Emilia’s chambers.

***

Lady Emilia Pembroke, Countess of Derby, gave birth to twins at approximately 3 am. Although the labour was painful, it was also swift and one of the most extraordinary things she had ever experienced in her life. The babes were small, but the boy and girl were as healthy as any children to be found in Britain. They screamed and wailed in the night, and the sound of it was like music to Emilia’s ears.

In the days that followed, Emilia rested much, and only awoke in order to take her babes in her arms. When she was too tired to hold them, Lord Joshua would do so, along with Georgina. It was too soon for anyone else to pay a call, but Emilia was informed that as soon as she was strong, Aunt Delia, Roderick, and Lady Marina would be paying a call.

In her dreamy sleep, Emilia felt something akin to exhaustion intermingled with ecstasy. She would never forget the one morning when, opening her eyes to the bright morning sunshine pouring through her window, she finally felt as though her spirits were strengthened, and Emilia was ready to get out of bed. Turning onto her side, she spotted Lord Joshua seated by the window and holding one baby in each of his large arms, smiling as though he were the happiest man in all the world.

“I’m feeling like myself again,” Emilia said with a smile.

“You’re the most extraordinary woman I have ever known,” Lord Joshua said. Just then, the earl got up from the chair and walked over to the bed, placing one babe in Emilia’s arms and holding onto the other. He lay himself beside Emilia in bed, and there they remained for some time, holding their beautiful children and every so often, indulging in a sweet kiss.

    9. It was so nice to read a story of romance where the heroine although innocent actually was truly a normal young girl with all the wavering feelings of first love. Joshua reminded me of my husband in that he knew what he wanted and set a straight course for it. Thank you for the enjoyment it granted me.

    1. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the extended epilogue I read it on holiday in Portugal and it really added to thee enjoyment of my holiday

  2. I enjoyed this extended epilogue very much. It completes the happily ever after that the other leaves hanging.

  3. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this lovely story and it’s extended Epilogue. Whilst not really marring the storyline, there are a number of errors regarding the characters’ names and titles here and there which can be a little frustrating .

  4. I enjoyed reading it, and found it to be a good love story. The brother’s story was a nice addition and in the extended epilogue we get closure on all storylines.

  5. I agree with Edna about the names. The Earl’s name was changed to Earl of Derby and Harry was named Henry in the extended epilogue. The fortune teller was referred to as he in the information for the extended epilogue.
The Earl was also called Earl of Derby in the About the book blurb also.

  6. I love this book! Wonderful story and had me unable to put down my phone while I read the interesting lives of Emilia and Joshua.

    Fabulous!!

  7. I LOVED this story! I did catch one error though in this part. It says she reached for a tissue…shouldn’t that be a handkerchief? Didn t think they had tissues yet then.
Anyway, excellent story and we’ll done, lady!

  8. I love the book so much. I love that the earl is so in love that he’ll do everything to have her for a wife. The earl is truly of the best men I’ve read about.

  9. Loved it. This extended epilogue was one of the best I’ve read in a long time. I’ve read some of the other comments where they noticed the little flaws but I thoroughly enjoyed it and didn’t even realized them. Keep the awesome books coming. Thanks .

  10. I loved this book and the characters of Emilia and Joshua. Beautifully penned and amazingly described. Loved the extended epilogue most.Waiting for your next book!

  11. Thank you I really enjoyed this book – no kidnappings, mistresses, prostitutes or Seven Dial type ruffians, just human emotions and interaction. Although I would like to have given Emilia’s maid good shake. Just as an aside I’m fairly sure when speaking with an Earl he would have been addresses as “My Lord” not “Your Grace” (this being the correct address for a Duke).

  12. Love the story and the extended epilogue, though there were a few mistakes that can be readily fixed. The title of Joshua , the child’s name. Overall the story is excellent reading.

  13. I loved tbhe story and wish that you had included the extended epilogue in the original book. It puts a really nice finish to a wonderful story. I also noticed quite a few discrepancies !

  14. I loved the book very much and I loved the character of Joshua. What a loving and wonderful man he is. I can’t imagine why Emilia felt the way she did initially however it all ended beautifully.

  15. Thoroughly enjoyed. Four years ago in 8/30 I lost my husband afr almost 59 years together. Stories like this help me relive, to a degree, the deep love we shared.

  16. This is a very good story and the extended epilogue was very interesting as Roderick and the earl both found happiness with their families

  17. Dear Lucy,
As a long-time admirer of your work this novel is quite remarkably the epitome of excellence, the jewel of your imagination and your crowning achievement to date!
And lest there are unbelievers among you, my husband of forty years and I fell into love & lust at first sight, and also came from two extraordinary diverse backgrounds. In my opinion, the more people who said we would never last just made us more determined to prove them wrong.
Precisely one of the factors that makes this Romance novel outstanding is Emelia’s combustible initial reaction. After all most people hear about the fairy tale story of others from neither one of those invested in that relationship. Yet, they still draw their nasty and hasty impression from an inner voice emphatically denying that they too are never good enough to be that worthy of this level of sublime happiness themselves.
I have only a single minor frustration with the epilogue. Joshua is one of reading strongest men ever portrayed. Plus the unique, deepest and almost otherworldly connection between Emelia and the Earl should break down the same conventional boundaries as defined during the entirety of their union. They surely would have already discussed if they chose to be separated during labor and delivery and made that choice clear to all those in attendance at the time they were first employed. I strongly feel they would have decided to remain as a unit and would have acquired knowledge from the best in their field of expertise.

  18. I wish it could have gone on forever but it truly was a wonderful book and I enjoy all the ones I have read so far

  19. I loved this story and the characters in it. I thought Roderick was a bit slow in realizing where his happiness was but gladly he did in the end. The extended epilogue completed the end of this book perfectly letting us know that Joshua had his heir and a daughter. A great story I enjoyed. Thank you

  20. What a wonderful love story!!! I felt as if these characters were so real that they could be friends of mine. I know that sounds odd, but that’s how your beautiful book me feel. Thank you, Lucy, for your great talent..

  21. I absolutely loved this story. The innocent Emilia and the Alpha Lord Joshua was a great combination. They both learned to love and respect each other. I’m adding you to my favorite authors list.

  22. I also loved the story. It started very catching and stayed that way ..I love your books because they all seem easy to read.thank you please keep writing for loving readers..

  23. Such a beautiful story, I loved all the characters in your story and so happy about the ending and the extended epilogue, will definitely keep reading your books, it’s so beautiful how love can make a big difference in a person, keep writing your great stories!

  24. loved the story line. wish there was more. the extended epilogue, cleared up some of questions about Henry or Harry. Do have a book about Rodrick?

  25. Great storyline, enjoyed the unexpected twists. Only 4 typos
    C12,p2-“aquatinted”=to-acquainted
    C15,l1-“ her”= his
    C18,1p-“couldn’t “to” do it”
    C20,2p-concerning =concern
Hope this is helpful. (Typos are like bumps in the road, ruining the smooth flow of the story, especially the gender switches😜.

  26. Actually this is the second book of yours that I feel is not only great but outstanding. The fact that the main characters have character flaws: blackmailing the heroine thru her love for her brother into marriage, getting women pregnant outside of marriage, etc, but the fact that a woman of the Ton actually gave up the pampered life to go on stage. The real struggle of a father to give up his son and lover for political ambitions . These things are not found in regular off the shelf historical Romance novels.
You keep amazing me with your unpredictable but extremely believable characters. As I said before I prefer the book to be all together to read rather than broken into an extension. However, I really love that I can enter a review without going through the hoops required by some review sites. Keep turning out your outstanding books!

  27. Another outstanding read. Characters were great and very well portrayed by a master author. Love your books, so keep them coming. Thank you Lucy.

  28. This is a good story and very enjoyable.I t has been almost a year since I read the first time but I think I enjoyed reading this time better

  29. Loved this book. I can relate to love at first sight. A friend bugged me for ages to meet this guy that was perfect for me. When I finally met him, I knew I had met my future husband. I called a dear friend who was living in Cleveland at the time. “Ron, I just called to tell you that you will be at my wedding in a year”. He asked if I wasn’t a bit premature. Well he was at my wedding 11 months later. I was off by one month. We were married 31 years. Sadly, my husband died in 2016 of congestive heart failure. He made me very happy.

  30. I really love reading your books, each story is captivating. I totally loved this story in particular, Good entertaining and suspenseful read.

  31. I loved this book! Loved the characters! Each of your books were all so different so interesting with the twist and turns I couldn’t wait to read the next page. The ending was great!

  32. Oh so sweet, their was a sweet and unique story that was so interesting regardless of Lord Joshua’s intense in getting what he wants.

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words and support my dear Shuvai. I truly appreciate it!

So glad you enjoyed the story! Make sure to stay tuned because I have more coming!

  33. i really enjoyed this book , i like a hard strong male personality and a woman with a strong personality , and am a romantic so i loved the ending with the twins. i truely love epilogues after i finish a story which ms langton alway s has at the end of her story.

    1. I’m humbled, my dear Ernice!

I’m really grateful for your support and kind feedback!

I’m glad to hear that you enjoy my stories and epilogues! Make sure to stay tuned because I have more coming!

  34. What a sweet and delightful story! I loved it! Look forward. to reading more of your work. The characters were believable and wonderful. Thank you for sharing.

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words and support my dear Anna. I truly appreciate it!

So glad you enjoyed the story! Make sure to stay tuned because I have more coming!

Thank you again and have a lovely day!

  35. I loved this book! The characters were real with believable challenges. I loved watching the characters grow. I couldn’t put the book
    down til the end.

    1. Thank you so much for your support my dear Therese. So glad you enjoyed the story! Make sure to stay tuned because I have more coming!

Thank you again and have a lovely day!

  36. Well written story. The two main characters Joshua and Amelia are not perfect people but in spite of their differences they manage to fall deeply in love with each other. The sub story of her brother Roderick and his love story is also very good. On the whole it is a very good read. However, the proof reading missed spelling mistakes. Joshua tells her that he reached out to her uncle to get his permission for the wedding but later says he would love to meet the uncle. so did he meet the uncle or not? Why was the uncle not at the wedding? Early in the book there is mention of a stable boy who put his hand on Amelia’s knee and there is a description of him but he is no where in the story after that so why introduce him to the story? Also, earls are never called your grace and should be addressed as your lord. The story is good and the characters are interesting. The book would have been even better without the mistakes.

    1. Thank you so much for your detailed feedback and thorough analysis.

You are raising some valid points and have a solid justification for them. I will keep them in mind and will work closer with my editor to get them handled in the future. Also we are slowly addressing the issue concerning our Proofreaders and hope that we will soon have new members joining our proofreading team!

Thank you again for taking the time to share your thoughts with me, they are very helpful. I hope you enjoy the rest of my stories. Have a great day!

  37. Lovely story. The extended epilogue is a nice way to wrap it up. There were minor typos and mix up of names which just shows better proofreading is needed. I liked that you addressed various social topics such as Lady Marina leaving the ton and wanting to continue to be an actress even after she marries. Having a son out of wedlock is also unusual. I think Joshua was right to want to stay with Emelia and you should have kept him there to provide comfort and support even if it was unconventional .

  38. This is the best book I have read so far. It captivated me so much that I read every single word. Which I normally don’t do. The characters are fascinating. The development of their emotions to the point that lead to that happy ending. And much more to say ..the story is grandiose. I love it.

  39. Oh this is the best ever story!! So much love and happiness for everyone and the way the story flowed forward and a perfect ending and even more perfect extended epilogue. I loved the characters so much. Fantastic book and made me feel really good. Wow thank you Lucy!
