Two years later
Benedict sat back in his chair and took a sip of coffee. He felt the heat of it coursing down his throat, and as he looked across the library, to where his wife was playing on the floor with baby Daniel, their son, he could not help but feel that he was the luckiest man on Earth.
He and Alice had fallen into the habit of taking their morning coffee together in the library, catching up on whatever was going on in their household and going through their correspondence together. They lived with the Baron now, in his London home, and the old man had very kindly given up his library for Benedict to have his own private space. He had never felt more grateful in his life, as he surveyed the scene around him.
He took a letter opener and slit open the envelope in his hand. A letter from Cecil was always a treat, and he had been looking forward to reading it.
“Well, Alice,” he said after he had read it through. “There is delightful news from France.”
“Oh, is it a letter from Clara?”
Benedict laughed. “No, I think that a letter from her will be on its way to you very soon though. This is from Cecil. He tells me that they are expecting their first child.”
“How wonderful!” Alice cried, before scooping Daniel up in her arms and smothering his face with kisses. “You shall soon have a new playmate, darling! Oh, I do hope they shall have a boy. And then perhaps we shall both have girls next. Wouldn’t that be perfect?”
Benedict grinned at his wife, enjoying her innocent delight. But then his face darkened a little. “Cecil has something further to tell us, and it is not such happy news, I am afraid.”
Alice placed Daniel down on the floor and gave him a wooden toy to play with, then crossed the room and sat opposite Benedict at his desk. “Tell me, dearest. What is it?”
“He says that he has heard that the Bow Street runners we hired to track Dorothea down have found her. She has been reduced to total penury. He says she is living in a hovel, practically having to beg for money. He wants to know if he should order the authorities to arrest her.”
Alice frowned. “I hardly know what to feel,” she confessed. “She has caused so much trouble for us all, that it would seem appropriate revenge to have her arrested. But we must ask my father. The decision will lie with him, as to what is to be done with her.”
Benedict nodded. “I suspect, though, that he will not want her to suffer anymore. I will mention it to him, of course, but I do not think he will want revenge. I do believe, now, that revenge is a rather over-rated concept.”
Alice smiled and Benedict knew that she could tell exactly what he was thinking. His desire for revenge had very nearly come between them, and now they had so much to be thankful for.
He leaned forward and kissed her across the table. “I am so glad, Alice, that all the pain of the past is behind us now.”
“So am I, Benedict. I do not think I have ever been happier, in all my life.”
There was a tap at the door and a young woman in a white cap and starched uniform came in. “Would you like me to take Daniel for his nap now, Mrs Fletcher?” she asked.
“That would be marvelous, Sally, thank you so much.” Alice smiled and kissed her son on the head, then watched as he pulled himself to his feet and toddled towards his nanny, arms outstretched. Sally scooped him up and carried him out of the room.
“Now then, Mrs. Fletcher,” Benedict said, looking at her with that glint in his eye that Alice now knew so well. He stood up and moved a few things into piles on the desk, clearing a space in front of him. “I do believe all the servants are busy, and there is no on likely to disturb us for a little while.”
“Benedict!” Alice protested. “We do not have time. We have to get ready to go to Aunt Felicity’s house!”
He strode around to where she was sitting, then lifted her out of her seat so that she was sitting on the edge of the desk. “We have time for what I have in mind…, and it does not matter if we are a little late,” he said, then gently pushed her back so that she was lying on the desk. He gathered her skirts up around her legs and moved his head so that it was between her legs, kissing her thighs gently as he worked his way up towards her center. He pushed her underthings aside and brushed her with his thumb, in the place where he knew that she most liked to be touched, and heard her let out a moan of desire.
“Oh my wife,” he murmured, before placing his mouth over that wet part of her and beginning to circle his tongue around that sweet spot that he knew would bring her most pleasure. He slid his hands beneath her bottom and pushed his tongue inside her, hearing her gasp with pleasure.
When he knew she was close to the brink, he pulled his mouth away and released his manhood from his breeches, from where it had been straining to be free. He slid inside her easily, and cupped her breasts with her hands as he thrust into her over and over again. At the moment that he felt her tense around him, he pushed himself deeply into her and felt his own pleasure coming hard and fast. They both cried out together in ecstasy, then collapsed into each other’s arms.
“You see,” he whispered in her ear. “We did have time.”
She giggled. “There is always time, Benedict, for our love,” she murmured. “And I do wonder if we might have made a daughter that time.”
He smiled. “Well, I do hope so, but I will not mind trying again, and again and again…!”

Greetings, cherished readers! I trust you relished this passionate tale. I eagerly await your comments here. Thank you, as always! ✨
I enjoyed your story of Alice and Benedict. It was suspenseful and exciting to find out what happen a long time ago with Alice’s father Baron Dunnvelle and his stolen horses, barn fire, with Benedict and his father accused of stealing horses and running away. Thanks, Marty
I am so glad you enjoyed the story dear Marty! Thank you for taking the time to comment! ✨
Spoiler alert. I really enjoyed the main characters. The hero’s mixed thoughts and the heroine’s innocents. The plot was good, the story was just heating up when the ending came rather quick and I think unrealistic. I wonder if there is a limit to the number of pages a novel can be. The heroine’s forgiveness after such a horrible betrayal was really out of character. Realistically you would think that she would wait awhile while she tested his sincerity. The immediate sex in the garden while her father and his friend were near was certainly not what you would think would happen especially after the letter was found. So, I think the story was okay, but I think it really could have been much better if it was longer to let the hero really suffer; let her discover her pregnancy and I’m sure the Baron would have been a little upset – any parent would be.
Thank you kindly for the support and your precious feedback dear Pamela! It really means a lot to me! Glad you enjoyed the story overall!
I love a happy ending.
The story had just the right amount of twists and turns to make a great read.
Thank you so much dear Ann! I truly appreciate your kind words! ✨
I loved the story so happy that they could every thing. I wonder what the baron will decide what to do with his wife?
Thank you so much dear Ruth! I am glad you enjoyed it! I apologize if I may have left some details unanswered in the extended epilogue!
An enjoyable story with lots of twists and turns to keeping me reading the story to find out what came next. Im glad the truth finaly came out about Benedicts father. Im also glad Alice was able to forgive Bendict for his plan to get his revenge on the Baron. The extended epilouge concluded the story well even though it would have been interesting to know what the Baron would have decided regarding his estranged wife. Thank you for a good read
I truly appreciate the support and feedback dear Nora! It is truly precious to me!
A very special story with all the components to keep my interest engaged. Betrayal, attempted murder, love and pain. A pleasure to read.
Thank you so much for your support dear! I am glad you enjoyed it!
Benedict and Alice had a love story. But,this being an ARC I must mention that I was surprised to find grammatical errors! For example *there* instead of “their”. Otherwise not a bad story ending a bit lamely! Isn’t the point of the epilogue meant to be some years later. Not just after a marriage and birth of the first child? Or do I have that wrong?
